Glyposaate is on its way out!
The EU Parliament has recently voted for strong restrictions on the use of Glyphosate which includes no approval for domestic use or in or close to, public playgrounds, parks and gardens.
Sweden, Holland and other countries have also followed suit. Many local governments around the world choose not to use Glyphosate in children’s parks, playgrounds and in their urban environments. You can read about it here:
Its time to stop spraying poisons in our urban environment and ensure that our children can grow healthy and safe in a pesticide free environment.
Pesticide use must change
The Alliance for a Clean Environment believes that there is sufficient scientific evidence that the ongoing and increasing use of pesticides in public open spaces, golf courses, sports fields, gardens and parks, places our children frequent such playgrounds, schools and childcare centres and in our urban environment on median strips, verges, footpaths, roads and other hard surfaces, is causing foreseeable and preventable harm to human health and our environment.
The overuse of Glyphosate particularly in our urban environment by local government authorities is risking our communities health, particularly our children who are more vulnerable to the impacts of pesticides.
Our scarce groundwater resources are at risk from the continuous applications of pesticides on the Swan Coastal Plain. Indeed there are very few days in the year when local governments are not spraying pesticides in our environment. It is therefore almost impossible to protect oneself from exposure to pesticide spray drift or residues in the urban environment.
Glyphosate has recently come under considerable criticism and scrutiny with a global scientific consensus declaring Glyphosate a Class 2A probable carcinogen and potential endocrine disruptor leaving unacceptable levels of residues in our food, water and bodies.
The WA Health Act (pesticide regulations) is failing to protect human health in our urban environment from pesticide applications. Agency regulators are failing to monitor, assess or enforce compliance with the Act.
Lengthy local government contracts with the pesticide industry are contributing to an industry biased and non- compliant culture, undermining progress towards safer, more sustainable alternatives for weed control in public places. This situation is untenable.
